How to Deal with Homesickness in APU

Writer's picture: Shah SaudShah Saud

Embarking on a journey that spans continents to reach the shores of a tropical nation adorned with palm trees, Malaysia stands akin to renowned tourist destinations like Hawaii and Indonesian beaches. However, the pursuit of an undergraduate education, particularly within esteemed private institutions like the Asia Pacific University (APU), presents itself as a multifaceted endeavour. A synthesis of diverse cultures, varied faculty backgrounds, a diverse student populace, and the tropical environment, complete with the quirk of carrying umbrellas to uni, collectively define the APU experience which will make you forget any homelessness at heart. 🌂 For an individual such as myself, who was born and raised in Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦and has been acclimatized to a parched and arid climate throughout my formative years, the transition to APU in Malaysia has induced a profound cultural shock. Although I'm starting my 2nd year here, I've managed to deal with the ups and downs (you will too). But this phenomenon is a shared one, prevalent among those who seek educational opportunities abroad, especially within international universities like APU. Bolstered by a well-crafted promotional campaign and a global presence in educational expos, APU witnesses an influx of aspiring high school graduates from various corners of the world. The choice to pursue education thousands of miles away from one's homeland inevitably engenders feelings of homesickness (which is natural to be honest). To address homesickness, students can leverage the free resources offered at the Psychological Wellbeing Center situated on Level 6, this facility serves as a support hub. However, for a substantial proportion, this transition is relatively navigable. The APU is known for its warm reception of the newcomers, fostering an inclusive atmosphere from the beginning. This ambiance is evident during the orientation sessions, where enthusiastic speakers exude a friendly vibe from the podium, a sentiment that resonates within the hearts of new students and reverberates throughout the classroom settings for years to come. (Not dragging it). ⭐ It is only necessary to acknowledge that one's remembrance of family and relatives back home stays at heart forever. Nonetheless, these mere feelings should not eclipse the narrative of studying at APU, which represents an occasion for holistic development – professionally and personally alike. The journey toward maturity should be gone through, and now's the time!
